HSE Officer (part-time)

Negotiable up to £45,000 (pro rata) Whetstone, Leicester

We are seeking an experienced HSE Officer to drive through Health & Safety initiatives to improve operational efficiencies in a safe and healthy environment for our team.

You will work closely with the Management team to develop and manage safety of the site, taking the lead on various projects, reviewing current processes and work towards making it a safer place to work.

You will also liaise with all levels in the business and present in a concise way to the senior leadership team.

Responsibilities: 

  • Identify hazards, performing risk assessments and implementing control measures to ensure the risk of injury is reduced or eliminated
  • Establish a full programme of documented health & safety inspections, audits and checks advising management of any improvements required
  • Complete departmental induction and orientation of new employees by providing information on hazards and risks in the workplace, job instruction, training and supervision as is necessary to ensure safe work for employees
  • Ensure that safety inspections are carried out, fire drills and fire alarms are correctly reported, risk assessments and lone working procedures are managed and employees are aware of their responsibilities
  • Proactively prepare health, safety and environment interventions and develop internal policy
  • Develop, implement and review safe work practices and procedures for all hazardous tasks
  • Provide personal protective equipment, instruction in its correct use, maintenance and limitations
  • Ensure a register of deployed equipment is continuously maintained and reviewed
  • Ensure all staff are aware of fire, evacuation and disaster procedures and coordinate regular training interventions in fire and emergency procedures and manual handling training, in collaboration with HR
  • Ensure full and accurate health and safety training records are maintained
  • Manage and organise the safe disposal of hazardous substances IAW local and national regulations
  • Oversee equipment installation to ensure safe procedures are followed
  • Carry out and co-ordinate accident / incident investigations, reporting RIDDOR to the HSE when required
  • Organise and review regular chemical monitoring ensuring that any operator/personnel exposure to selected materials are within the give HSE guidelines
  • Review REACH regulations in ensuring that all raw materials used onsite are compliant and up to date.
  • Lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks including H&S Toolbox Talks
  • Produce newsletters and bulletins to all staff
  • Monitor and report on relevant KPI’s, producing weekly management reports.
  • Undertake continual professional development activities including attending seminars and reading professional journals

Essential skills: 

  • IOSH/NEBOSH or working towards
  • Intermediate MS Office skills

Experience:

  • SME manufacturing background Experience of ISO9001
  • Awareness of 14001/45001
  • Familiar with primary UK workplace legislation

Desirable

  • Relevant HND qualification, e.g. Engineering, Polymer Science Technology, Manufacturing, etc. IOSH or IIRM member
  • 3 years or more in a H&S position
  •  Background in FMCG or chemical manufacturing environment
  •  2 years or more experience working with 9001/14001/45001

This is a part-time role, 24 hours per week.
